Schlüter Systems Plattsburgh Facility is Expanding and Creating Additional Jobs

August 2009 Issue

Schlüter Systems L.P. is expanding its operations and constructing a new 57,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh, NY. Production of a new product, known as Kerdi Board, will take place at this new facility and result in the creation of up to 40 new jobs over the next few years. Kerdi Board is a structural waterproof board intended to support tile installation where water and moisture are a concern. This will be Schlüter’s first manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh, expanding on their current operations which include distribution, product promotion, customer service, and product development. The company presently employs 113 people locally.

“This new product line is a good example of how the pooling of international resources can lead to creative innovations. We are excited about this new product line, which has the potential to add a substantial portion to our business,” says Reinhard Plank, President and CEO of Schlüter Systems.

Schlüter Systems produces and distributes a unique and innovative line of tiling installation solutions that includes protective membranes, joint and edging materials, shower drains, drain adapters and shower kits. Schlüter Systems L.P., the company’s North American subsidiary, was established in 1986 with offices in Montreal, Canada and Plattsburgh, New York. Plattsburgh is the company’s only US location. The North American operation is the second-largest within the corporation; the largest is the world headquarters in Iserlohn, Germany. Schlüter Systems L.P. has had great success and Plattsburgh facility leaders lobbied hard to encourage the Germany-based corporate office to undertake expansion plans in Plattsburgh rather than another US location.

The cost of the expansion project is projected to be $9 Million. Construction of the new facility is scheduled to be completed at the end of November, 2009. Schlüter will be welcoming thirteen German nationals with the initiation of Kerdi Board production. Ten will be from the various companies that had a part in building the production machinery and three will be from the corporate headquarters in Germany. The members of the German team bring know-how in operating the machinery and will train new employees in the manufacture of the new product.

In addition to the Plattsburgh expansion project, Schlüter Systems has a 30,000 sq ft office building addition nearing completion in Plattsburgh and a new office/training facility under construction in Montréal, QC. The company is thriving in Plattsburgh and optimistic for future additional growth with continued success.
