April 2009 Issue

Clinton County New York once again scored well on the scale of economic success as the region’s largest city has been recognized by Site Selection Magazine’s 2008 Governor’s Cup Awards. Plattsburgh, NY was ranked 14th in the nation as a Top Micropolitan area. Since 2002, Plattsburgh has annually placed in the top 20 among Micropolitans due to the significant number of large economic development projects throughout the county.

Site Selection’s Governor’s Cup Awards recognize the top states in the nation as well as top Metropolitans and Micropolitans based on new or expanded facilities over the past 12 months. The magazine defines Micropolitans as municipalities with 10,000-50,000 people that cover at least one county. According to Site Selection, the magazine of corporate real-estate strategy and area economic development, these are the most prestigious awards in economic development and are great honors for those states and communities recognized.

Four major projects which met specific qualifications designated by the magazine were submitted. These project qualifications include, the number of jobs created, the project size and the projected cost. Included in the 2008 submission was the $30 Million expansion of Quebec-based bus manufacturer Nova Bus for a new 136,000 SF assembly plant in Plattsburgh, NY. The $177 Million Noble Wind Energy Turbine project, the $33.5 Million CVPH Medical Center expansion located in Plattsburgh, NY and the $9 Million construction of the new Hampton Inn and Suites project were other key local 2008 projects. The nominations covered four major areas of local development; industrial, renewable energy, community development and tourism accurately portraying Plattsburgh and Clinton County’s diverse and dynamic business community.

Each of these projects not only played a positive role in the local economy by capturing hundreds of millions of dollars of investment into the community, but also were responsible for creating hundreds of quality employment opportunities for local workers. TDC will continue to promote the region and will strive to equal the success achieved in 2008 for future years by creating new and sustainable economic development opportunities in our community.
